Jon and his colleagues at the civil service have got stuck into supporting RSN over the past few months. In this guest blog post, he tells us what they've been up to and extends an invitation to a film screening on 9th February. Join us!

As a group of individuals that all started working in the civil service in September 2017, we were very fortunate to be given time during our working week to volunteer for and fundraise for a charity of our choice.

We were really passionate about picking Refugee Support Network as our chosen charity, and our support for the amazing work that they do has only grown since some of us have been involved as educational mentors to a refugee in London.

Over the last few months, we have also raised money through cake sales and quizzes organised in the various government departments that we work within – in Leeds, Wakefield and London. Just before Christmas, we also put on an improvised pantomime at The Miller pub in London Bridge, which raised over £100.

Film screenings: 9th February

We will be holding an evening of film screenings on Friday 9th February to raise awareness of the varied experiences of refugees travelling to Europe. We are delighted to be screening independent filmmaker Jeremy Martin’s Through Abdullah’s Eyes, which tells the story of Abdullah’s often harrowing experience of fleeing the conflict in Syria and being forced to settle in camps, followed by a Q&A session with both Jeremy and Abdullah which is sure to be fascinating. Also screening will be the short-film Serhat produced by upcoming young filmmaker Kate Fleming, which tells the story of a refugee from Turkey living in London, who also has to navigate life with a severe visual impairment.

The event will be held at the Civil Service Club, on Great Scotland Yard, between 6pm and 8.30pm, and further details can be found on the Eventbrite page here.  We will also be providing some food to continue fundraising for RSN’s vital educational mentoring scheme, and we would be delighted if you could join us.

The total's now in. Through a combination of fundraising activities (a quiz, pantomime, bake sale, film event and charity football tournament) the team have raised over £1,000. Thank you!
