As September begins we are celebrating another successful year working in partnership with the Schwab & Westheimer Trust to support 14 scholars undertaking health and social care related degrees at universities around the UK.

All of our scholars successfully passed their years, with five completing their degrees and graduating. Each and every one of the scholars have overcome different challenges in order to access higher education, and we are continually inspired by their perseverance and commitment to pursuing their education in spite of the frequent barriers.

One notable success came in January when Nima - the recipient of the scholarship supported by the Marks Family Charitable Trust - was shortlisted as a finalist at the British Education Awards which took place at the Hilton Hotel in Manchester. This was in recognition of his outstanding academic results and extracurricular success during his degree. Nima is currently completing his Masters degree in Linguistics at Manchester University.

After the event Nima said,

“I was truly humbled to be shortlisted to the top 4 in England and was so privileged and mega proud to be able to represent refugees and linguists up against other wonderful finalists from across the UK.”

Fresh from his success, Nima was went on to present at a showcase event highlighting student achievement and promoting British Education at the House of Commons in March. The occasion was attended by previous BEA winners and finalists, along with family members, MPs, and other government officials who all came out to support the aims of the BEA. Congratulations Nima!

We are grateful to the trustees of the Schwab and Westheimer Trust for their ongoing passion and willingness to invest in the lives of asylum seekers, refugees, and others with precarious immigration statuses. And we are looking forward to welcoming our new scholars this month.
