New project in the East of England

Approximately 650 asylum-seeking and refugee children live in the East of England. We are delighted to announce the expansion of RSN to this part of the UK with a mentoring project in two new cities: Cambridge and Peterborough.

Our new member of staff, a qualified social worker, Becca Torrance, will be working from Peterborough and Cambridge to enable a new cohort of young refugees and asylum seekers to access our educational mentoring programme. We will be partnering with the charities already at work among refugees and asylum seekers such as the Cambridge Refugee Resettlement Campaign and the British Red Cross where our Peterborough office space is based. 

We know our educational mentoring will complement the work already being done by other charities in this area. Louise Lawson, Refugee Support Service Manager, from the British Red Cross Peterborough commented: 

‘The children and young people we support often have difficulty understanding and navigating the education system in the UK, particularly when they have little experience of formal education in their own countries. Refugee Support Network’s education mentoring programme will make a big difference in helping these children and young people achieve their full potential in education’.

As we start up, we are excited to be recruiting and training local volunteers to mentor the young people who are referred to us. This is an exciting time to join a great programme which is already thriving in London, Oxford and Birmingham. Could you spare an hour a week to mentor a young refugee?
