Myanmar

Refugee Support Network is developing a partnership with a local Burmese organisation, the Victor Foundation, on the outskirts of Yangon to enable more ethnic minority and conflict affected children to enrol, remain and progress in their education.
Myanmar (Burma) has long been affected by conflict, and remains under military rule.  In May 2008, the country was hit by Cyclone Nargis and almost 140,000 people were killed, more than half children. More than 2 million people were directly affected by the cyclone.

Although 80% of children in Myanmar enrol in primary education, over half of these are unable to complete their studies.  Children in Myanmar risk abduction into armed forces or the trafficking trade when making their journeys to school, in addition to facing barriers of poverty, displacement and gender.  Getting an education is a battle, but a battle that children, their parents and communities think is worth fighting.
